Routes to Opportunity

Buddies Cafe (Monday - Friday 9.30am - 4.00pm)

Buddies Cafe at Milford Youth Centre is a project facilitated by Milford Youth Matters and Pembrokeshire Youth which is open to the public Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 3.30pm. Young people can be referred by Job Centre Plus and it acts as an eight week work experience placement for 16-25 year olds who are unemployed to develop and gain new skills. During the placement young people have the chance to complete a number of qualifications and accreditations in addition to understanding profit margins and the importance of food hygiene as well as developing transferable skills desired by employers.

Buddies Cafe was shortlisted for a Youth Excellence Award this year and two young people and staff had the chance to attend the awards ceremony in Llandudno.

Introduction to Leisure

As with Buddies this is an eight week vocational work experience placement providing young people with hands on experience of sports and leisure industry. The programme is delivered in partnership between Milford Youth Centre and Pembrokeshire Leisure. During the placement young people will be given an opportunity to work alongside leisure centre staff and experience all aspects of the industry from administrative duties, risk assessments, activity planning and co-ordination and first aid.

Dig It! (Monday 3.00pm - 5.00pm)

The Dig It! group meets every Monday afternoon at Milford Youth Centre. It is a group for young parents led by young parents. Young parents and their children have the chance to take part in some gardening at the Youth Centre.

This year we have started planting lettuce, courgettes, broccoli, and sweet corn. The idea is to grow produce that the group can take home or can be used at Buddies Cafe. Although the project is just starting up, the group are looking at ways to recruit new parents to come along.

Job Seekers (Thursday 10.00am - 11.00am)

This is a closed group working with young people who have been identified through Job Centre Plus aged 16-25, currently on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA). The session is delivered in partnership with Job Centre Plus and focuses around supporting individuals to move closer to work through interactive workshops.

Drop In (Thursday 1.00pm - 5.00pm)

Milford Youth Matters offer a 'drop in' service for young people every Thursday afternoon offering support with CV writing, interview techniques, completing application forms, job searching and other support. The Job Centre, Pembrokeshire Youth Service and other organisations refer young people to the Drop In.

Essential Skills Tuition (Tuesday 11.00am - 1.00pm)

Delivered by Learning Pembrokeshire, the group session offers young people the opportunity to achieve qualifications that suit their individual level of learning in essential skills including literacy and numeracy. The individual can chose to develop skills from entry level up to a Level Two qualification.

Milford Haven Youth Committee (MHYC) (Tuesday 3.30pm - 5.00pm)

MHYC are a new group who currently meet once a fortnight at the Youth Centre. The committee was established to lead the work delivered by Milford Youth Matters, come up with new ideas and decide what the needs are for young people in Milford Haven.

They are currently working towards raising money through fundraising events to purchase equipment to clean off graffiti in the local town. The first fundraiser was outside Tescos in Milford Haven where they met local MP Stephen Crabb and the second involved a family fun day, with the Youth Centre opening its doors to local families.

The group are currently recruiting new members and welcome anyone aged 14-25 to come along to the next meeting. Check out the Facebook page Milford Haven Youth Committee for more information.

Street Based Youth Work (Friday 6.30pm - 9.30pm)

The Friday Night Project - Milford Haven Youth Centre is open every Friday from 6.30-9.30pm for young people in Year 10+. The session is led by young people and is a fun relaxed environment. Activities include grill nights, music workshops, drug and alcohol awareness sessions and community projects. If you would like to attend drop in from 6.30pm or contact the centre for more information.

MY Time

MY Time (Milford Youth Time) is a volunteering incentive scheme for 16-25 year olds in Milford Haven. The project is facilitated by Milford Youth Matters and Pembrokeshire Youth.

The programme offers a reward to the value of £20.00 in exchange for 20 hours volunteering in the local community. The vouchers can be spent in local shops that have signed up to the scheme.

Volunteering that has taken place so far included litter picks, beach cleans, dog walking at Green Acres, being active members on Milford Haven Youth Committee, hosting a Christmas lunch for local pensioners, Guides leaders and supporting children and young people at the local Yacht Club. The project gives young people the opportunity to be rewarded for their positive contribution to the community as well as enhancing their employability, developing new skills, meeting new people and preparing them for work.

The project is funded by Milford Haven Port Authority and supported by Milford Haven Business Circle.

Previous Projects

Chat and Chill

Chat and Chill offered a relaxed and fun environment for parents under 25 to access language and play session with their children; it was facilitated by Milford Youth Matters staff and delivered by Flying Start.

The sessions gave parents an opportunity to learn the importance of planning for the development of children with routine to prepare them for school. Activities included craft, music, singing and reading time.

Employment Skills Days

Employment Skills Days offered unemployed young people an opportunity to take part in team building activities, interview techniques workshops and group tasks to prepare them for work.

Participants were referred by the Job Centre and sessions were delivered by Milford Youth Matters staff offering a variety of workshops which developed individual skills transferable to the workplace. Some of the participants from this event signed up to other projects on offer at the Centre.

Get It!

The Get It! project was a European Social Funded project managed by the WCVA through the Welsh Assembly Government. It operated twice a week and aims to support 16-25 year olds who are unemployed in moving closer to the jobs market. The Get It! project has helped 33 young people achieve qualifications or accreditations in Essential Skills including literacy and numeracy, Food Hygiene Level 2, First Aid, budgeting and compiling a CV.

The participants had the opportunity to organise and attend an overnight camping residential in Pembrey where they had to plan, manage a budget, cook the food and take part in all camp duties. The residential developed independent living skills, numeracy and literacy skills and transferable work skills. None of the young people had been to Pembrey before and one female enjoyed it so much that she packed a tent and returned a week later!

Participants organised a jobs fair that saw 47 young people from the local community attend. They telephoned and emailed employers, prepared the venue and literature for the event and greeted guests upon arrival. The fair was a great success and gave the group an opportunity to meet employers, apply for vacancies and ask any questions directly. The feedback from the employers was fantastic and all group members were pleased with the outcome of the day.

The Get It! project has also been involved in numerous volunteering days including a dog walk at Green Acres and a beach tidy up at Dale. The project recognises the need to equip young people with the skills to be able to successfully gain long term employment such as time management, responsibility, confidence and communication. These skills were built upon in Wednesday sessions through practical, challenging activities such as social enterprise, volunteering, team challenge days, and independent living tasks. When appropriate these soft skills are backed up with the completion of formal qualifications, such as First Aid, Food Hygiene Level 2 and maths and English equivalent to GCSE 'C' or above.

It ran on Tuesdays from 11.00am - 1.00pm and Wednesdays 11.00am - 3.00pm. The Tuesday session focused on literacy and numeracy skills, delivered by a tutor from Learning Pembrokeshire. The Wednesday session was a practical session tailored to the needs of the individual, putting literacy and numeracy into practice in a practical way that develops transferable skills to prepare young people for work. As agreed with Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) Engagement Gateway who managed the scheme and European Social Fund (ESF) who were the funders.

Open Air Fest

The Open Air Fest took place at the Mackerel Quay in August 2013. The event was organised by young people and Milford Youth Matters staff and gave young musicians from across Pembrokeshire the opportunity to perform on stage to an audience.

The Torch Theatre and Milford Haven Port Authority supported the event. Young people volunteered their time to prepare for the event as well as volunteer on the day. Funding was made available through Milford Haven Port Authority, Milford Haven Town Council, Youth Bank and Red Nose Day Community Cash.
